IBAYI DESIGN blanket is unpaired by Nwenda which is a rectangular garment with two straps for the shoulders that wraps around the body and is tucked on one side. These vibrant garments are worn across the chest or at the waist. There are meanings attached to each nwenda through embroidered lines and color. In context to their mythical beliefs; red represents soil or god, blue represents the sky or rain, black is to darkness or death, and white is happiness. These are some of the primary color motifs in Venda dress, with variances in color as time progresses. When a young woman at marrying age, or a khomba is not engaged, she wears her shedo as a undergarment and her nwenda tucked at the waist or across the chest. As stated earlier, lines are embroidered on the nwendas to signify meaning.
One line across means that a young woman is not engaged, many lines mean that she is married. Married women were dignified and to be respected by the village, thus their garments are vibrantly decorated, and with the goat or sheep’s ear used as a stud to act as eyes for the spirit within the skin.
